    best MOnth Ever: Winter Term

    2008-12-08 18:53:52

What program brings you close to the pyramids, face to face with sea turtles in Costa Rica, or to a theater viewing Indie movies with the actor that stars in that very film? It’s Winter Term at DePauw University. During the month of January, our school offers a plethora of international trips to Egypt and Costa Rica, and domestic trips to places like Telluride to see the Sundance film festival. You can also learn to SCUBA dive on campus then head down to a resort in Cozumel for another week-and-a-half of SCUBA diving. This year, I am going to China, staying about 4 days each in Beijing, Guilin, Shanghai, and Hong Kong, which is enough time to experience the culture and see something new. You can also opt to stay on campus for classes that are shorter in time. For example many begin at 9 and adjourn at noon. Last year, I took a class on the Indiana wilderness, where I enlightened my wild side by walking in the nature park with my class, learning about birds and trees, then returning to my comfy bed to nap the day away. Other options include taking a cycling class on spinning bikes, creative writing classes, or taking a class on finding happiness in your life. Finally, for those career-driven students, it would be wise to do an internship in any city for a month. For those who need to completely de-stress or make money, there is the option to go home for one Winter Term over the course of the four years. It is these unstructured days that are causing DePauw’s administration to reevaluate their Winter Term program, making classes more difficult and with greater expectations of the students. However, most are opposed to this amendment, as Winter Term provides us diligent students with a much-needed break from the ordinary and rigor of our semester classes. Winter Term is also known nationally and is a selling point for this University. Many friendships are formed and solidified during this month, friendships that bridge the gap that is created from being in different Greek Houses. For these reasons, Winter Term is great as it is, and is arguably the Best Month Ever in the life of a DePauw student.

Best Week Ever: Monon Week at DePauw Univeristy

    2008-11-14 14:27:39

Monon. This five-lettered word is the epitome of, arguably, the best week of a DePauw University student’s semester. Monon is the first part of the title “Monon Bell”. The Monon Bell is the symbol of pride between DePauw University and Wabash College, an all male liberal arts college home to 900 men. The bell is housed at the school that wins The Monon Bell game, which is a football game played every fall between these two schools. The Monon game is the longest running tradition East of the Mississippi River, and this is the 115th annual game.

So, one might say it’s a pretty big deal. This is the week when students at DePauw really care about football. Almost the entire campus, plus faculty and alumni, come back for the game and last year when it was held at DePauw, extra bleachers were transported in for the game. Professors post-pone assignments the week of Monon because they know students’ focuses are not on their studies. A typically studious, conscientious campus will toss their books aside to celebrate the 115th annual Monon Bell Game this weekend.

This is the most spirited week of the year. Festivites for Monon began last night, Thursday, with the Alpha Chapter of Alpha Chi Omega’s philanthropy, Ring Sing. It’s a pep rally for the Game. Then today is the Rugby game at DePauw University with Wabash. Saturday is the game, which I am looking forward to a great deal. You can catch it on ESPN HD-NET on Saturday, Nov 15th at 1 pm Eastern. Go Tigers!
