Filed under Sports - Basketball (Men) Okay, now they are proven...
Danny Ecker reporting from Columbus, OH (2008-08-18 12:46:15)

This is an obligatory follow-up to last week’s blog “‘Redeem Team’ Is Still Unproven”. Plain and simple, now they are.
Team USA basketball turned back the clock to Barcelona ’92 this morning, spanking Germany by (yawn) 49 points. The Dream Team-esque victory featured a number of high-flying circus dunks and a squad of German players looking more confused than a shark racing Michael Phelps. And while Germany is not exactly the class of Olympic basketball, they were a solid team that—before getting trounced by USA—were shooting almost 40 percent from beyond the arc.
In their five preliminary round games, Team USA averaged 103 points per game while it gave up an average of 71. They have a total of 72 steals. The next highest total is Australia with 54, and then there is a huge drop-off after that. And, like the Jordan-Bird-Magic era, these games are over early in the 2nd quarter.
Look for the driven “Redeem Team” to live up its name in style this week as the squad marches over every team in its path this week.
