Will Maetzold's Blog

I am a junior at Mizzou and am constantly chasing Missouri Tigers.

I've got the latest videos and blogs on the Mizzou football team as well as other Mizzou sports, political events on campus, student opinions and sometimes even giant plastic bubbles that students have been known to roll around in on the intramural field.

I also love the airline industry, the Columbus Blue Jackets, the Minnesota Twins and cross country running. So lookout for those to be brought up every once in awhile.

    No Pinkel Presser Today

Will Maetzold reporting from Columbia, MO (2008-11-17 17:31:15)

It's a tough day for me as there is no Missouri football media day and Gary Pinkel press conference today due to Missouri's bye week. It's the Tigers second of the season and gives them two weeks to prepare for Kansas in Kansas City after Thanksgiving. Mizzou is already Big 12 North champions with its win at Iowa State and KU's loss against Texas. So it'll be all about the rivalry in Kansas City. Then Mizzou returns to Arrowhead Stadium the next weekend for the Big 12 Championship Game and tries to knock off a south team.

In place of football coverage today, we'll fill in with Mizzou basketball. The Tigers play their second game of the year tonight at home against Chattanooga. I'm about to head out there. Check back later for more on the game.

    Mizzou Basketball Opens With Win

Will Maetzold reporting from Columbia, MO (2008-11-15 19:46:48)

A fun Saturday for Mizzou fans started off this afternoon with the first game of the regular season for the basketball team. The Tigers took control of Prairie View A&M early and had no problem in an 86-65 win. They had some big contributions from freshmen who look like they could have a pretty big impact this year. Senior Leo Lyons had a big game, leading the Tigers with 21 points.

Some of the fans at the basketball game at Mizzou Arena stayed in their seats to watch the Mizzou football game against Iowa State. The football game started almost as soon as they basketball game ended and is being played on the big screen on the scoreboard.

Check out the story on the basketball team's win now posted.

Filed under Sports - Football Big 12 North In The Balance

Will Maetzold reporting from Columbia, MO (2008-11-14 15:45:15)

Mizzou can get it done this weekend. There's no reason to wait until the border battle at Arrowhead Stadium with Kansas after Thanksgiving. If Texas beats KU and Missouri beats Iowa State on Saturday, the Tigers are Big 12 North Champions for the second year in a row. That sounds sweet.

But nothing is a given and Iowa State has proven tough for Mizzou, especially in Ames. ISU has won the last 3 out of 4 in Ames, including a controversial 21-16 win in 2006.

Check for the video soon on Missouri's thoughts on clinching the Big 12 North this weekend. Go 'Horns! And Tigers!

    Crazy About Soccer

Will Maetzold reporting from Columbia, MO (2008-11-11 14:39:14)

The Missouri women's soccer team won the Big 12 Championship Sunday by beating Colorado 1-0. Believe it or not, it is Missouri's first Big 12 championship in any sport since 1997. That's right - 11 years ago the softball team won the regular season and tournament titles. And now the streak is over.

The soccer talk is pretty rampant around campus. Football coach Gary Pinkel started out yesterday's weekly press conference with a salute to the soccer team and coach Bryan Blitz. Track coach Rick McGuire - or professor McGuire to me - had us give a round of applause to the one soccer player in his sports psych class today.

These things only come around once every 11 years. Well, hopefully it doesn't take that long again.

    What A Month

Will Maetzold reporting from Columbia, MO (2008-11-10 17:25:24)

    11f7a6a3a98023b26101.jpg

November. A popular word today at Missouri's weekly press conference. The Tigers so far are 2-0 in November and have plenty to play for the rest of the month. A Big 12 North Division title is at the top of the list. It can be clinched this Saturday if Kansas loses and Missouri beats Iowa State. Of course, coach Pinkel and the players were having none of that. Chase Daniel did at least admit it'd be nice to win the title this week, but he's got his mind on Ames, Iowa, and the Cyclones this Saturday.

Also discussed this afternoon was tight end Chase Coffman's return after missing the Kansas State game last Saturday. Pinkel said Coffman is probable for the ISU game.

Pinkel also referred to the work ethic of Michael Jordan when talking about his wide receiver Jeremy Maclin. That gives you an idea of just how good the kid is - and how good he can be.

With November also comes the cold. Got a good feel for that on Saturday at Faurot Field. It's supposed to be colder in Ames this weekend. Offensive lineman Kurtis Gregory told me his dad was in Des Moines today and told him to get ready because he was freezing. The K-State game though should help Mizzou as they've had a game to get adjusted to the cold already and it didn't seem to bother them.

Check back soon on the Mizzou page for the Tigers' thoughts on the month. We'll also have more coverage throughout week as Mizzou gets set to head to Iowa.

    Chilly And Purple

Will Maetzold reporting from Columbia, MO (2008-11-08 17:15:49)

Those are the two things that stand out tonight at Faurot Field. Most people are trying anything they can to stay warm on a windy, chilly night. Lots of hot chocolate are chili out there. And a few among them are in purple, sticking out so well among the Tiger fans mostly in dressed in black for tonight's blackout. I even saw one woman in a full-length purple velvet jacket.

Check out the video of the seniors' final Tiger Walk into the stadium coming soon. There was great support for the seniors out there this afternoon.

Well, it should only get colder. I'm ready to head down to the field!

    Lines Not Bad At Mizzou

Will Maetzold reporting from Columbia, MO (2008-11-04 15:09:11)

I stopped by Memorial Union, the polling location for many Missouri students, at 12:15 and 2 p.m. this afternoon and the good news is the line wasn't out the door. There were about 25 people or so in line each time I checked and things seemed to be moving fine. They have plenty of voting booths set up for people to fill out their ballots. When I stopped by the first time, only five or so were being used out of about 30 they have setup.

The other thing I did notice outside of the polling place was how many Obama supporters are stationed on campus. There were at least four different areas where they were setup, handing out stickers and posters. I didn't see any McCain supporters on campus that were doing anything resembling this.

We'll see soon how it all turns out.

    Another Night Game At Mizzou

Will Maetzold reporting from Columbia, MO (2008-11-02 14:58:52)

Better check the lights after this season is over. With all the night games Missouri has played, there will probably be a few bulbs burned out.

Missouri's game with Kansas State this Saturday will be another night game at Faurot Field. It was announced today that the game will kickoff at 6 p.m. This makes all the Big 12 home games for Missouri this year at night and 4 of 6 total home games under the lights.

It should be a fun one as it is Senior Day which is always exciting... and a little emotional. Check back for more from Mizzou's media day tomorrow.

    Obama Rocks Mizzou

Will Maetzold reporting from Columbia, MO (2008-10-30 23:51:35)

    cd6d2b063dab359a6e91.jpg

Barack Obama filled the South Quad at Mizzou on Thursday night just five days before the election.

Obama arrived on stage earlier than most people believed he would. He stepped on stage a little before 9:30, the time he was scheduled to speak. Reports were that he would actually come to the stage around 10, but he didn't make the crowd wait.

Obama referenced the young voters in Missouri and continued to downplay John McCain's portrayal of him.

He spoke for just about 30 minutes total. The students I talked to were pretty impressed. Check for the video soon.

    Obama Coming To Mizzou

Will Maetzold reporting from Columbia, MO (2008-10-28 14:31:53)

    c5020dd02845332b6514.jpg

Think Missouri students are important to Barack Obama? I would say so.

With less than a week until it's time to go to the polls, Obama will stop smack dab in the middle of Mizzou's campus on Thursday night. He will speak on the South Quad, just south of Jesse Hall, beginning at 9:30 p.m.

The campus certainly seems abuzz with news of the rally. It started last night with Facebook statuses proclaiming Obama's visit. It was a hot topic in classes today. There were people handing out fliers for the event in Speaker's Circle.

    Should be a big night.
