Danny Ecker's Blog

After spending his senior year at Northwestern University reporting on Wildcat sports, Danny moved back to his hometown to work for Palestra.net. He is now a graduate producer/reporter and is happy to be living in Columbus-- the greatest city ever created by mankind.

When he is not at the office or reporting in the field, Danny spends his time playing a variety of sports, watching reruns of Boy Meets World, and patiently waiting for the Columbus Blue Jackets to make a playoff run. His role models include Mr. Rogers, Zack Morris, and former Ohio State quarterback Craig Krenzel. Sesame Street's hard hitting news reporter Guy Smiley inspired Danny to start a career in broadcasting.

    Greg Robinson Fired

Danny Ecker reporting from Syracuse, NY (2008-11-16 14:47:39)

Looks like enough is enough in upstate New York. Syracuse AD Daryl Gross says he has informed head football coach Greg Robinson that the Orange are ready "to move our football program in a new direction".

Robinson will coach the final two games for the Orange this season. He has a 9-36 record at the Syracuse helm.

Steve Andress will have more from Gross' press conference here in a bit. Be sure to come back and check it out!

Jim Tressel Just Walked Out On A Press Conference

Danny Ecker reporting from Columbus, OH (2008-11-06 12:23:03)

Jim Tressel just walked out of a press conference. Pretty sure that has never happened before during his time at Ohio State.

Tress came out for his weekly Thursday media availability, and was immediately bombarded with a dozen questions about the suspension of Ohio State WR Ray Small-- after The Columbus Dispatch and Cleveland Plain-Dealer published the story in today's issues.

Clearly annoyed by the questions (at least, as annoyed as he gets), Tressel repeatedly dodged the questions. He acknowledged that Small won't be playing this week, but that was about it. And after the 13th question about it, he simply said he thought we'd be talking about Northwestern today. Then he walked away.

Something was eating at Tress today. Maybe it was the fact that Ray Small's dad has opened his mouth about his son's situation.

    Unbelievable.

Danny Ecker reporting from Columbus, OH (2008-11-04 22:51:15)

Sitting here in my apartment, flipping through news channels and scanning websites that all don the same headline: "Barack Obama Elected President", I fully realize how historic this night is. So I figured I'd jot down some emotions.

Tonight is one of those nights that all of us-- especially those of my generation-- will remember for as long as we live. We'll remember where we were when we heard the news, how we felt, and when it truly sunk in that we just elected our nation's first black president. We did something today in our country that Americans 100 years from now will study as a critical moment in the development of the United States.

Think about the fact that when our parents were our age, the idea of electing a person of color to the highest office in the country was absurd. It was something they thought the nation couldn't handle. It was something they were sure would never happen in their lifetime.

But tonight, regardless of political affiliation (and rest assured that I am one of the most apolitical journalists there could be), we have to take a step back and be proud of what we have proven. We have the ability to look beyond race to make the United States the best place to live in the world.

    Pretty damn cool.

    What Long Lines?

Danny Ecker reporting from Columbus, OH (2008-11-04 14:06:32)

I've lived in Ohio for most of my life. And without question, the lines at polls this year have been longer than before. I have talked to a number of people here in Columbus who waited at least a couple hours to cast their ballots. But today, voting at my precinct took all of about ten minutes.

I walked in, showed my ID, signed the signature book, headed over to the voting machine, and cast my ballot. It couldn't have been easier. The room the poll was in even smelled like cinnamon.

Just thought I'd throw my experience in with the high number of horror stories about waiting in line forever.

    College Gameday With Gameday Batman

Danny Ecker reporting from Columbus, OH (2008-10-25 15:44:28)

    19db8eef401bc91de7ec.png

I have been to College Gameday in Columbus before.

But never with a giant stuffed Batman perched on a 15-foot pole... until today.

My morning with Gameday Batman at ESPN's College Gameday was a good time, although the security guards were more ridiculous than a Mark Mangino diet. I was told to take down the sign that Batman was holding, which said: "GamedayBatman.com".

Now, I understand that they don't want advertisements on signs there. But gamedaybatman.com is more or less a joke-- and it's nothing compared to the overly offensive things on dozens of other signs.

Oh well. At least my job isn't to ruin everyone's good time like that dude.

    The Effect Of Prosecution...

Danny Ecker reporting from Cincinnati, OH (2008-10-22 16:43:27)

So I hit the road to Cincinnati, Ohio today to get a sense for how far this alleged voter fraud spreads.

I'll have the story up on the site here soon, but I just had to throw out an interesting sound byte that I got from John Williams, the director of the Hamilton County (Cincinnati) Board Of Elections.

When I asked him about any fallout that he has seen from the "Vote From Home" investigation going on back in Columbus, he mentioned that he got a call a few days ago from a person who had come to Ohio temporarily to register and vote here, then headed back to where they were from. The person called to ask if the Board Of Elections would withdraw his/her cast ballot.

Now, Williams said he wasn't sure, but speculated that it may have been a direct result of intimidation from the serious investigation going on in C-bus.

So maybe this thing goes pretty deep... but work is certainly being done to correct it.

Check out my story later tonight for more.

What have you done with YOUR life?

Danny Ecker reporting from Columbus, OH (2008-10-06 14:35:31)

    1d55bd7ca4ddc768ac58.jpg

As I was putting headlines together this morning, a frightening thought crossed my mind.

Dustin Moscovitz and Justin Rosenstein are 1 and 2 years older than I am, respectively. Who are these dudes? Oh, just the multi-millionaire 24 and 25 year olds that are leaving their jobs at Facebook next month to try something else. No big deal.

    Let’s be more specific.

Moscovitz, 24 (pictured), was roommates with Mark Zuckerberg (Facebook co-founder and CEO) at Harvard on February 4, 2004, when the two created what would become one of the 5 most visited websites in the world. He has worked for the company ever since—you know, just the daily grind of transforming the way people communicate and watching his bank account explode faster than you can update your relationship status. Moscovitz decided this week that he’s helped raise one multi-billion dollar mega-power company—why not another?

Rosenstein, 25, was hired by Moscovitz and left his job as a top engineer at Google in 2007 to help turn Facebook into its current powerhouse state. After graduating with a computer science degree from Stanford, Rosenstein spent three years as a product manager for the search engine champion before he split for the ‘Book. Now, he too has decided that he’s had enough of ruling the social networking world and is moving on.

Now, none of this is meant to take a shot at these guys. On the contrary, I commend them for rolling the dice and trying something new. All I am saying is….. wow. That’s a nice little resume to boast by your mid-twenties.

I guess I’ll just be satisfied with my random college unpaid internships, paying dues and doing bitch work. But have faith-- soon enough I’ll be making mad bank when I patent a Jump To Conclusions Mat.

Filed under Sports - Football Big East Recap: Week 4

Danny Ecker reporting from Palestra.net HQ (2008-09-23 11:21:54)

    6e3c207ddd9b833ae295.jpg

    WHAT WE LEARNED:

    1. IT SUCKS TO BE A WEST VIRGINIA FAN.

After their second straight loss, the Mountaineers are one more upset away from qualifying for Sean Merinar’s Gnarly News. Pat White continues to show glimmers of last year’s greatness, but in much smaller doses. At least they head back to Morgantown for three straight.

    2. WE CAN FINALLY TAKE SYRACUSE FOOTBALL FANS OFF OF SUICIDE WATCH.

Well, maybe not. The Orange notched their first win of the season on Saturday vs. Northeastern, but now it’s Big East time. Under Greg Robinson, Syracuse is 8-31. In Big East play, they are 2-22. The Syracuse AD has said “it isn’t working out” with coach Greg Robinson, and “we got so many good things going on here—the 800-pound gorilla is football.” For the sake of Gary Orr, let’s hope things get turned around.

    3. DONALD BROWN IS STILL FILTHY.

The UConn RB continues to put up Heisman-like numbers, though nobody seems to be giving him much attention. He still ranks in the top echelon of the nation’s running backs in the yards department, and he is averaging 6.3 yards per carry. The next three weeks will provide the right barometer, however, as the Huskies hit the road to Louisville, UNC, and Rutgers.

    Big East Preview: Week 4

Danny Ecker reporting from Palestra.net HQ (2008-09-19 14:49:59)

    1d961a2788e9d76fc5f9.png

    BAYLOR AT CONNECTICUT

Donald Brown continues his Heisman (yes, I said it) campaign in East Hartford against a Baylor Bears team that botched its first attempt at a bowl-bound team in a loss to Wake Forest. Expect Brown to rip off another century mark in rushing yards as UConn improves to 4-0 and creeps closer to the top 25.

No. 16 USF AT FLORIDA INTERNATIONAL

Any chance the Bulls ride the high from last week’s thriller against Kansas and forget to play hard against FIU? No. There is no chance. Matt Grothe and company are here to stay.

    IOWA AT PITTSBURGH

Whatever hype surrounded Pittsburgh before the season started has been decimated by their first two games. LeSean McCoy is still capable of single-handedly changing a game, but Iowa isn’t as much of a pushover as it has been the last couple seasons. College football’s highest paid coach Kirk Ferentz will earn that bank with a road win.

    MIAMI (OH) AT CINCINNATI

It’s the battle of southwest Ohio. Now, I honestly believe that MAC teams are a force to be reckoned with, and are recruiting some fantastic athletes these days. But, Cincy has too much experience under his belt to let a Redhawks team in a down year trip them up.

    RUTGERS AT NAVY

Navy RB Shun White rushed for a school record 348 yards against Towson in week 1. That is not a typo. Yes, it was Towson, but averaging about 20 yards per carry against anyone is impressive. I’m gonna go ahead and encourage the Scarlet Knights to rush 7 every play. Perhaps they’ll have more success on the road than they’ve had at home in the first two games.

    NORTHEASTERN AT SYRACUSE

In their first effort against a directional opponent, the Orange put up a decent fight before getting pummeled by Northwestern. Now they try FCS opponent Northeastern, hoping to move their season in a different direction. Gary Orr be damned.
